The SAFE team with participants from University of Stirling (UK), West Pomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin (Poland) and Shanghai Ocean University engaged with carp farmers and their polyculture systems in Guangdong, China. These farms are highly productive (average 20, sometimes up to 80 t/ha/yr) and combine various carp species and others to optimise resource efficiency. Despite having very different systems, they experience some of the same challenges as European freshwater aquaculture farms. The main goal of this trip was knowledge exchange to learn about different strategies to improve sustainability and profitability.
